On the weekend of 28th & 29th April, ELYC had the pleasure of hosting RYA instructor Kian Sterritt for the delivery of some early season race coaching.

The North Berwick weather held up its end of the bargain and the coaching was delivered to our eager participants in near perfect conditions.

Seabird Centre Planning Application

At East Lothian Council Planning Committee meeting on 7th November, Councillors voted in favour of the Planning Officers recommendation to refuse planning permission for 'alterations and extensions to the Scottish Seabird Centre and adjacent sun lounge'.

The application is therefore refused.

On the evening of Sunday 5^th November 2017, East Lothian Yacht Club held their annual fireworks display at North Berwick Harbour. It was a clear moonlit night and over 1,500 people turned up to watch the spectacular display. For the first time, the Yacht Club set the fireworks off remotely, using a dedicated electronic device. This ensured a continuous display lasting over 20 minutes, with no need for people having to run between the sets of displays with a lighted taper. The display was financially supported by North Berwick Community Council, North Berwick Golf Club, and North Berwick Harbour Trust Association. Entry to the display was by donation and people gave generously, which will ensure a similar display can be held next year.

Aberdeen and Stonehaven Regatta - Scottish Aero Championship - ELYC members do well!

5 ELYC sailors made the short trip to Stonehaven at the weekend to take part in the ASYC regatta and Scottish Aero championship.

Iain McGonigal took home the Scottish Aero trophy, with Robbie Lawson and Angus Boyd taking second and third.

Blackness Boat Club Invitation

As summer comes in I’ve been asked by our Committee to let you know that your members are warmly invited to call in at Blackness. We are always pleased to see visitors and you will find a ready welcome. Our comfortable clubhouse has the usual facilities, including a well stocked bar. It offers panoramic views of the upper Forth. Blackness Castle is a few minutes’ walk away. During the sailing season the clubhouse is usually open but it’s a good idea to call the Commodore or Harbour Master in advance, particularly if you are coming from some distance away or where a number of boats are sailing together.

Boats can lie alongside the pier for 2.5 – 3 hrs either side of high water, depending on the state of the tide. In settled weather yachts can berth at the pier over more than one tide. At HWS there is approximately 3 metres of water at the pier, less at other times. There are usually club members around to take lines and give a hand with tying up but again it’s a good idea to get in touch with the Harbour Master before arrival. There is a slipway for landing from tenders for those who prefer to moor in the bay. Blackness Bay dries out so is suitable only for bilge keelers and yachts with lifting keels.

The Committee is keen to encourage visitors to make Blackness one of their destinations and we look forward to seeing some of you over the summer.

Is North Berwick Town Centre a great place for everyone?

Are you interested in how the Town works, how parking and traffic are organised, or have ideas about how walking and cycling can be made easier or the environment improved? Then come along and get involved.

A design ‘charrette’ is being run in North Berwick from Tuesday 30 May to Saturday 3 June 2017 that anyone can join in. You don’t need any particular skills or expertise, and you’re not expected to have ‘all the answers’, a little time and enthusiasm is all you need to bring.

Through a series of discussions and on site practical demonstrations local people will get the chance to work together with the Charrette Team to develop ideas and test out suggestions that may make the town centre work better for everybody.

The aim is to reach a consensus using local knowledge and views from the whole community on the best way to make changes that can feed into the Local Area Plan and Local Transportation Strategy.

The charrette is being run by Kevin Murray Associates who are planning, regeneration, and urban design consultants. The charrette was commissioned by North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership as a result of the views expressed through our community conversation events and is funded by East Lothian Council and Scottish Government Charrette Mainstreaming Programme.

ELYC Training 2017

ELYC Training 2017

Ben Wilcox (Chief Sailing Instructor), Callum Inglis (Chief PowerBoating Instructor), myself (Training Principal), together with our Commodore Robbie and Committee are excited to launch ELYC's Training Programme for 2017. There is a huge amount of fantastic activities going on within the club this season, definitely something to suit everyone but please let us know if you think we are missing anything!

ELYC Training 2017 Aims:

• To introduce local residents and families to ELYC and the sport of sailing in a safe and supportive environment. Support new club members to become active members within ELYC.

• To provide an integrated Start Sailing Pathway from learning to sail, improving skills to start racing. During this process hopefully becoming boat owners.

• To support club members who wish to pursue instructor qualifications while continuing to be active sailors within ELYC, ensuring integration across all aspects of ELYC.

Activities:

Thursday Novice Racing - This activity has moved from Monday to a Thursday evening for 2017 and as per 2016 will be run by a team of volunteers and led by Iain McGonigal. One of our new Cadet Captain's Ellen Clark is happy to answer any questions. This evening is a great introduction into Racing.

Start time 6pm, commencing 4^th May.

Friday Sailing - This is a great evening to spend some time relaxing out on the water at the end of the week, this activity is not training and all sailors need to be competent on the water. Our other new Cadet Captain Will Derries will be the main contact for this activity, which is again run by volunteers.

Start time 6pm, commencing 5^th May.

Push the Boat Out Harbour Weekend - The whole harbour is having an open day, with more details to follow but definitely a date for the diary and a fantastic day not to be missed. If you would like to help with the organisation / running of this day please let us know as we will soon be putting together a team of volunteers.

Date - Friday 19th (evening) and Saturday 20th (morning) May

Family Taster / Refresher Saturday Mornings - This activity will see the relaunch of 'Bass Rock Bandits' with it being open to children of members aged 8+ years, the difference though is we are encouraging all parents to get involved out on the water too. This activity is open to all members and if there is interest we can run an improvers / refresher morning too. We have two dates to start as below. More details to follow.

Dates - 29th April / 1st July

Saturday Monthly Novice Racing - Every month we will have a separate novice start and smaller course on a Saturday Racing that will form the Ferrier series. The rescue boats will be available to help support our less experienced sailors to get round the course and hopefully build on the skills and experience they have gained at Thursday Novice racing.

Dates - 15^th April, 13^th May, 17^th June, 15^th July, 19^th August and 16^th September. Please check the online calendar for the full club calendar.

Powerboat Refresher Saturday Mornings - These will be run by Alan Stewart and are a get way to practice some important powerboating skills.

ELYC Safety Boat Course - This course is still under development but will be a great progression from the RYA PB2 course and will focus on the recovery of boats commonly seen on the water at ELYC sailing activities.

RYA Courses:

RYA Assistant Instructor Course:

Our summer programme Senior Instructor Sean Gardner will be volunteering to run this course for any sailor who would like to start their Instructor journey. It is open to any sailor who has completed their Stage 4 or Start Racing RYA certificates or who has completed their Stage 2 and a good amount of sailing / racing following this.

Dates: Sunday 18th & 25th June

Cost: Free to members - we would hope that our new AIs would volunteer to help with the summer programme the following week 3rd-7th July - please contact Laura on trainingprincipal@elyc.org.uk if you would like a place on this course.

RYA Dinghy Instructor Course:

This course is already full but please let us know if you are keen to pursue Instructor qualifications as the club has a developed pathway to support sailors to become instructors. For 2017 we are keen to encourage adult sailors to become instructors to help support all the activities we run. We are hoping that if there is sufficient interest we can arrange another DI course over two / three weekends towards the end of the season.

Dates: 4th March (pre-assessment) & 10th-14th April

Adult Learn to Sail:

If you are new to sailing this is the course for you, run by a team of volunteers and led by Mike Willis one of our very experienced Senior Instructors. Following completion of this course, new members /sailors will be assigned an AOOD (assistant officer of the day) or ACOX (assistant rescue) duty, to introduce them to the club activities.

Dates: Friday evening 12th, Sat-Sun 20th-12th & 27th-28th May - if there is appropriate interest we will look into running a second course so please join the waiting list if the course if full.

Cost: £100+membership

Junior Learn to Sail & Improvers Week:

This week is run by our paid training team and will have both a learn to sail and improvers course. The course will roughly follow RYA syllabus although the focus is on having fun on the water and developing confidence in this fantastic sport.

There will be 12 beginners & 8 improvers places. Sailors have to be 11 years old and confident in the water.

Dates: 3rd-7th July.

Cost: £175+membership

PowerBoat Level 2

This is a fantastic course to learn the basic essential powerboating skills. We are very lucky to have a number of PowerBoat Instructors in the club who volunteer to run these courses throughout the season.

RYA Safety Boat

This course is mainly aimed at those current Dinghy Instructors who are keen to progress onto becoming a Senior Instructor, although is open to all members. It covers everything from recovering a Topper to Windsurfer.

Boat Hire:

Although hopefully as many sailors as possible will become boat owners, especially when you are new to the sport we do not want anyone to miss out on the many sailing activities the club has to offer because they do not have a boat. Therefore, our 12 club Toppers and 2 Laser 2000s are available to hire. Full details and terms of hire can be found on the website.

There really is something for everyone this season and please let us know if there is anything we can do to support you or if you would like to get involved in any way at all - we are always looking for extra volunteers.

ELYC now have a new tractor. This was part funded by North Berwick Trust and the pictures show Rev Neil Dougall, Chair of the North Berwick Trust.

'We are delighted to acknowledge support from NB Trust to enable us to purchase a new tractor which will aid safer launching and recovery of all boats including rescue craft. This is crucial in our weekly activities and of course our ability to host national events such as the Toppers, which makes such an economic impact on the local area'

The summer is unfortunately drawing to a close and it's time for the tail end charlie of Forth based regattas at Fisherrow Yacht Club on the 17th / 18th September.

A small, friendly club running both dinghy and yacht racing round the cans in our bay, we have a large spread of abilities in our membership so novices and experts alike should find some competition.

By arrangement with ELC, yachts can berth free of charge in the drying harbour over the weekend and all visitors will be very welcome.

6 Days that shaped the 2015 National Solo Championship

Just 2 weeks have passed since the National and Nation’s Cup titles were concluded at North Berwick. The 70 competitors have departed back to the four corners of the UK, some with trophies and all with good memories of a great Championship. North Berwick had delivered lovely weather and a slickly run event for the National Solo Class, no wonder then that it was our third visit to this beautiful location on the east coast of Scotland in ten years. Fisherrow Yacht Club Regatta - 12/13 September

This year we are trying something different at Fisherrow for our regatta, we are splitting our regatta into two one day events. Saturday 12th Sept will be the yacht regatta consisting of 3 short round the cans races and Sunday 13th Sept will be the dinghy regatta, 5 short races back to back.

We hope this format will prove more attractive to visitors and if you plan to bring your yacht to the Saturday, berthing in Fisherrow Harbour will be free for competitors on the Friday and Saturday nights.

East Coast Sailing Festival 2015

Cruising and Racing Sailors are invited you to take part in the upcoming East Coast Sailing Festival 2015, either to race for four days from Wednesday the 19th to Sunday the 23rd of August or to join the Muster taking place on the weekend of Friday the 21st to Sunday the 23rd.

East Coast Sailing Festival has evolved from East Coast Sailing week a long established racing event that rotates between Northumberland, the Tay & the Forth. There will be a Coastal Rowing event, a Traditional Boat Muster, four days of varied Racing with separate classes for Restricted Sail all the way through to Division 1 Yachts, an RS400 Dinghy Regatta and lastly but certainly not least the Cruising Muster.

The Muster event is to be based at Port Edgar and the plan is for boats to arrive on the Friday and join in with fun in the Festival Marque and in the Port Edgar Yacht Club clubhouse. On Saturday there is to be a cruise in company to Burntisland harbour for a delicious lunch hosted by Burntisland Sailing Club and provided by Food for Thought. There will be a hog roast held at Port Edgar in the evening.

On Sunday weather permitting it is hoped to have a Sunflower mooring of yachts after which you can head home or stay on to watch the final prize giving for the racing, socialise a bit more and then head back on the Monday.

Due to berthing constraints at Burntisland Muster places are limited to forty boats so please enter now to avoid disappointment.

Jim Fergus' Funeral

Jim Fergus, who celebrated his 100th birthday in April passed away peacefully in Stirling on 31 May 2015. The funeral takes place on Friday 5th June at 1pm at Falkirk Crematorium and the family would be delighted to see anyone from the club.

Forth Ports

At the Forth Ports Authority meeting for small harbours and clubs recently, it was advised that they provide weather and, more particularly, live tidal information for various locations in the estuary, including Methil and Leith.

The tidal information gives a real time comparison of predicted and actual tidal height. This comparison from nearby locations could be combined with tidal predictions for Fidra from the UK Hydrographic Office Admiralty EasyTide website to give some indication of actual tidal heights at North Berwick. Presumably this may not fully take into account onshore wind but the wind will be known from the clubs own measurements, and these comparisons from Leith and Methil should give an indication of the effect of atmospheric pressure on tidal height.

Goat on a boat

The filming was for a Norwegian TV dark comedy drama called "Dag". Series 1 is shortly to be shown on Sky. This was filming for the fifth (and final) series, which goes out on Nordic TV this autumn. As well as filming the goat we took actor Anders Baasmo Christiansen out to be filmed sailing Paragon, with filming firstly from onboard the boat and then from the shore. All good fun, and we were lucky with the January weather which was pretty windy but possible with a reef in!

The film crew were also busy on the Law, and out towards Tantallon. Look forward to seeing the outcome in due course.

Final Bart's Bash report 2014

Over 30,000 people take to the water for the first Bart's Bash

Final results show an amazing 30,717 participants took to the water, many for their first time, around the world, for the first “Bart’s Bash” on 21 September 2014.

The sailing race was a fund raising event in memory of Andrew Simpson, the Olympic sailor who died in a training accident in May 2013.

Since race day the Bart’s Bash results team has been busy compiling and processing thousands of results and can now confirm that an incredible sixteen thousand, eight hundred and seventy (16,870) boats collectively sailed a staggering eighty seven million, seventy two thousand, seven hundred and sixty nine (87,072,769) metres, roughly the equivalent of sailing twice around the world.

The inaugural Bart’s Bash was a race run by sailing clubs around the world on behalf of the charity, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. Each sailing club sailed an individual Bart’s Bash race at their location. Race details were set locally by each club, but the course needed to be over 1km and sailed for more than 15 minutes.

Overall winners were; Hans Wallen sailing at Cape Crow Yacht Club in Sweden in a M32 Catamaran, Riccardo Macchiavello sailing at Circolo Nautico Rapallo in Italy in an Altura 1101 and Grant Piggott sailing at Weston Sailing Club in Great Britain in a Nacra 17. Initially organisers had hoped for fifty (50) clubs to sign up with two thousand (2000) participants in the UK. As the day drew closer it became apparent that clubs all over the world were using the opportunity to get as many people sailing as possible on the day.

Delta Lloyd open Dutch Championships recorded the highest numbers of boats sailing from the club at 233. In the UK Parkstone Yacht Club recorded a whopping one hundred and ninety four (194) boats on the water.

The Laser Standard dominated the dinghy class leader board, taking the top spot with one thousand six hundred and seventy seven (1,677) entries, Optimists were in second place with one thousand one hundred and seventy eight (1178) boats on the water and the Laser Radial took third with nine hundred and fifty three (953) boats.

Event Manager for Bart’s Bash, Tim Anderton said “At no point could we ever have expected over five hundred (500) clubs in over sixty (60) countries to embrace the idea of getting on the water, racing, having fun and celebrating everything Bart stood for. This has to be one of the largest sailing participation events in the world. We would like to thank all those who took part in the event and a special thank to the volunteers, over seven thousand of them, who made it possible.”

Canal closure

Lowland Canal Closure for Railway maintenance

Scottish Canals would like to remind you that Network Rail will be carrying out upgrading works to Carmuirs Tunnel beside The Falkirk Wheel. Therefore the canal will be closed at that point from Monday 20th October 2014 through to and including Friday 27th March 2015. A towpath diversion will be in place.

During this time, there will still be access from Grangemouth, up through the Wheel and onto the Union, however there will be no east to west transits possible.

Please bear this closure in mind and allow sufficient time if you need to arrange boat movements over the winter or are returning to your winter berth.

Streaker Nationals at ELYC Regatta

Fifteen Streakers entered for this year's East Lothian Yacht Club regatta including eight home boats. The event was very much a game of two halves - particularly for the Streaker fleet. Saturday saw the fleet arrive an easterly gusting over 30knots - so much wind that the Race Officers had to postpone the first start for an hour or two to give the wind chance to moderate. Once the fleets were released to the more sheltered course to the west of Bass Rock racing got underway with a trapezoid course consisting of a starboard tack dead into the waves and a port tack along them followed by a screaming reach across the rollers, an interesting run (set perfectly) and a close reach to the leeward mark. Paul Rigg (ELYC) and James Whitehead (Filey SC) dominated the race from start to finish with excellent boat handling in the conditions, which were enough to deter all but the foolhardy half dozen Streakers who took part. John Hookway (ELYC) showed his familiarity with the conditions by coming a creditable third in the first race. Paul Rigg took line honours and was clearly ready for more.
Race two saw the same course and a very similar wind to the first race. Paul and James romped away, Dan Phillips (Ripon SC) and Ian Bradley (Ouse Amateur SC) fought out the first beat with Ian getting there first but clipping the mark - Dan took full advantage of this to get well ahead on the reach and into third place. Ian Bradley misjudged his gybe on the run and a passing wave was happy to help him to provide some entertainment for anyone who cared to watch which allowed Charles Adams (West Lancs YC) through to take fourth place.Â

Sunday was a complete contrast. A beautiful sunny morning brought a light, shifty wind which meant the Race Officer had to abort the starting sequence moments before the first start as a massive shift changed the beat to a beam reach. Once the wind settled down the fleet of thirteen got away, with Ian Bradley pipping Paul Rigg and John Hookway to the first mark which allowed him clear air to draw ahead of the fleet. Paul Rigg and John Hookway had a good scrap for second which Paul won, In the main pack there were plenty of tussles, with the beat into the strong tide giving an extra challenge. The second race of the day saw Paul Rigg, John Hookway and Paul Noble arrive first to the windward mark when the port side payed dividends. Paul retained a good lead until the end and Ian Bradley worked his way through over the two laps to take second from John Hookway within yards of the finish. The race over, the Race Officer looked at the wind prospects and ended the racing for the day as the sea breeze fought with the gradient wind and caused total confusion.Â

The overall result was that Paul Rigg took the Scottish National title, becoming the first ever Streaker Scottish National Champion. Ian Bradley climbed to second and local John Hookway represented the home fleet on the podium. The visitors thanked the host club for a well organised series in testing conditions at an excellent venue - we'll be back next year to meet up with the friends new and old that we have made at this most hospitable club.

ELYC BBQ

Sunday 18th August 2013 from 1 - 4pm

ELYC is holding the BBQ at Yellowcraigs, Dirleton again this year following last years success. We have booked the BBQ area which is close to the beach and the carpark. Yellowcraigs is close enough to the club to walk, cycle, sail or drive.

All are welcome, so bring the whole family and friends. there will be activities for the younger members and cadets.

Please bring your own food and drink. the BBQ will be provided.

In the event of bad weather it will be held within the Yacht club. any change in venue would be notified on the website and by email.

ELYC Yacht Regatta 2013

The Yacht Regatta was held on Saturday 29th June over 4 races. Originally the plan was to also race on Sunday but due to the weather forecast, it was decided to hold 4 races on Saturday, rather than the the original 3 planned races. Unfortunately, only 3 boats took part, probably due to the date chosen, which was at the start of the school holidays. Two races were held on Saturday morning, and the 3rd race was started with the dinghy race sequence in the afternoon. The 4th race started after the 2nd dinghy start.

Jeremy Willing and John Elcock, sailing the Hawk 20, 'Sundance' achieved four 1st places to win the regatta. Alastair Skinner in the Red Fox 'Aquila' scored four 2nd places and Martin and Val Baillie in their Medina 'Westway' scored four 3rd places.

The pictures show the start of the 1st race, and Donald Mackinnon, Vice Commodore, presenting the prizes to Jeremey Willing and John Elcock.

Sunday Social Sailing Sessions for Cadets and Adults 28 April

If you want to enjoy some time on the water with safety cover and maybe nothing much more than a plan to look at the puffins, join us for Sunday Social Sailing.

The session will be run by a qualified Dinghy Instructor who will brief sailors before launching. You are asked not to stray beyond the agreed sailing area but apart from sticking to the usual rules for avoiding collisions and staying safe, what you do is up to yourselves.

Briefing on the beach at 1pm, off the water by 4pm

£4 using a club boat, £2 in your own boat; maximum 30 sailors

Autumn Novice Racing

To embrace the enthusiasm of all our developing sailors, we will be running novice starts throughout the Autumn series. There will be a second start for novice racers 3 minutes after the main fleet start. We propose that the novice fleet follow the same course as the main fleet. This will avoid any "crossing paths" and make the OOD's task simpler.

Novice racers....Please remember to sign out on the sheet inside the clubhouse door, marking yourself as NOVICE FLEET. Please endeavour to keep clear of the main fleet start. If you are a long way behind the fleet, you will be given an estimated finishing place.

Main Fleet sailors....Give a safe, wide berth to these guys and be as encouraging as you can be!

OOD s....Please note finish times, simply subtracting 3 minutes to calculate results. If there are any "stragglers", give them a visual finish palce, and proceed with the next race. We are keen that the main racing is not delayed.

The North Berwick Harbour Trust Association has been managing the North Berwick Harbour area, on behalf of East Lothian Council, since 2006.
Much work has been done and now both parties are ready to form a full Trust with Trustees being selected.

ELYC is holding the BBQ at Yellowcraigs, Dirletonon Sunday 26 August. We have booked the BBQ area which is close to the beach and the carpark. Yellowcraigs is close enough to the club to walk, cycle, sail or drive.

All are welcome, there will be activities for the younger members and cadets.

Please bring your own food and drink. the BBQ will be provided.

In the event of bad weather it will be held within the Yacht club. any change in venue would be notified on the website and by email.

Fun, Friendly, and Free!

Calling all ELYC girls and women - it's time to get out on the water, gain confidence, develop your skills, touch up your tan, and eat cake.

Start the day at 10:00 with coffee and cake, lunch around 13:00, finish at 16:00. We intend to have two sessions on the water, morning and afternoon.

No charge - please bring something to share for lunch.
This event is only open to female club members.
Minimum age 8, no maximum age.
All cadets must have passed Stages 1 and 2.
Adults who don't have Level 2 are welcome, provided you can swim.

This is a renowned day of relaxed sailing, a great ‘pot luck’ lunch, and sunshine (those who have been before just forget the fog!)

We have a finite number of club boats to sail in, but we will make sure that if you come down you will get a sail. Weather permitting, as always.

RYA First Aid Course at ELYC on July 1st 2012

The club will be running a First Aid Course on Sunday July 1st, with a particular emphasis on First Aid afloat.

This is an excellent opportunity to get qualified as a First Aider, or if you last did a First Aid course over 3 years ago, to requalify by getting an update. Course will run at cost price for members.

Scottish Youth Series at Fortrose

We would like to invite you all to the exciting event coming to The Black Isle on 30/6-1/7/12. Chanonry Sailing Club and Nairn Sailing Club are combining forces to host the first Moray Firth Scottish Youth Series Dinghy Regatta, which is to be held at Chanonry Sailing Club, Fortrose. This is a large ranking event, one of 5 to be held around Scotland this season, and quite unprecedented in terms of scale. Families will be coming from all over the country to race their sailing dinghies in the Moray Firth, from the youngest 7 years olds in Optimists up to very experienced National Squad members sailing 29ers. A total of 10 classes will be competing here including coached fleets for novice competitors. Although this is primarily a Youth event, Laser Standards are participating too. Over 18s will be permitted to race.

ELYC Greek Night- Saturday 26 May

There are still 20 places available for Andreas’ Greek Night for Club members next Saturday. The bar will be open as usual for Club events.
The evening is being offered at the very reasonable price of £16 per head, as compared with his usual price of £22. Andreas has been a very good friend of ELYC, so come and support him – as anyone who has been to a Greek Night before will know a very fun evening is guaranteed.

Commodore's Coffee Morning

The ELYC Commodore’s Coffee Morning raised £330 despite a less than hoped for turn out from members. Proceeds from the event will be put towards the purchase of a video camera to be used as a teaching aid for young dinghy sailors and improvers in training. Many thanks to Andreas and Karen from the Buttercup Cafe for donating the scones, tea and coffee.

Commodore's Coffee Morning

You are cordially invited to attend the annual Commodore's Coffee Morning on Saturday 5th May ELYC Club House.

Please come along and enjoy the stalls, the cafe will be serving coffee and freshly baked scones donated by Andreas.

The entry fee,which includes a cup of coffee or glass of juice and a scone, is £2.00 adults and 50p children.

Doors open at 10 am.

Bring your family and friends, we hope local residents will also join us.

There will be a home made cake stall with tasty donations from fellow club members, a book / DVD / computer game stall, White Elephant stall, a Tombola and Raffle with prizes for all ages, and lots of games.

The money raised at this event is spent on items that benefit all club members. It was used to buy a flat screened television for the sail loft which allow us all to view photographs taken of the action on the water.

If you want to make a contribution to one of the stalls, the Tombola or Raffle, please bring your donation along to the Club House on Friday 4th May from 7pm or Saturday 5th May before 9.30.

Granary Store tidy-up

The granary store has a large numbers of masts, foils and outboard engines in it. Many of these have lain unused for an extended period of time. Some may belong to individuals who are no longer members. The plan is to tidy up the granary store to allow for more space and to help in the task the Committeewould ask members to label the above equipment by the end of March. After this steps will be taken to dispose of unlabelled equipment.

The cadet Regatta will run on the weekend of 10/11 September, and as always will be a fun event! The racing is short and sharp, giving everyone a chance to win, with lots of prizes available.

You can sail your own boat or borrow a club boat. The club are trying to borrow some extra boats for the weekend, but still it is likely that demand will outstretch resources!

comers are welcome, but generally the boats that take part have one or

been enjoyed by crews in Drascombes, Shrimpers, Westerlies and

character boats, as well as the wooden and the old in the ELYC Fleet.

Sarah Alexander qualifies for the Laser Radial Youth Worlds

'I recently found out that I'm one of 20 girls from Great Britain who've qualified for the Laser Radial Youth Worlds in La Rochelle, France, this summer. There were three weekend qualifiying regattas at Stokes Bay, Plymouth and Pwllheli and the week-long Youth Nationals in Hayling Island, all of which contributed to the Youth ladder ranking order. A disappointing result at the Youths and a lack of wind at Plymouth meant I had to go to Pwllheli the weekend before my Higher exams started!

Since hearing the news I've been spending a lot of time at the gym trying to get fitter for the event - the laser is a very physical boat and La Rochelle is renowned for being windy! I'm working on my aerobic fitness and also core strength and stability. Over exams I gave up a bit and I'm regretting it now!

Registration and measurement take place on the 24th and 25th of July then there is a four day qualifying series to divide the fleet into Gold and Silver. Then another two days of racing to determine the final places before we get a rest! I'm really looking forward to the week, it's my first time competing abroad so I'm mainly just hoping to get round the course within the time limit! It's hard to believe it's only four years since I did my stage 1 and 2 - any of the cadets on Summer School could be doing the same in a few years! '

The Quiz Night on Saturday 18th June at 7.30 pm in the Club House has been postponed until further notice due to unforeseen circumstances. This is a popular event which we hope to run later in the year.

Fun Fridays IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Fun Fridays are a period of social sailing with rescue boat cover which is available to all club members. Fun Fridays are proving very popular and are often fully booked fully very quickly.

The sessions are limited to those people who have booked and all places must be booked on the website regardless of whether or not you are using your own boat. The session numbers are controlled in order that the club can provide sufficient and appropriate safety cover. It is of course appropriate for anyone with their own boat to sail whenever they like, but the rescue cover will be there for those signed up to take part in the Fun Friday session.

Bookings open 7 days before the Fun Friday session for example Friday 27 May will be available to book from Friday 20th May. The reason for making people book each week is to try and provide opportunities for more people to be able to take part.

We will ONLY accept the person that is booked for the session, we will not accept substitutions unless previously agreed through training@elyc.org.uk. If there are any cancellations they will be made available on a first served basis through the website. If you are unable to make the session please email training@elyc.org.uk. ASAP and we will endeavour to make your place available to others. We do not hold a waiting list.

There is a small charge of £3 per person to take part in Fun Fridays, and this includes use of a club boat if required. You will be expected to have passed your RYA Stage/Level 2 and to be able to sail to this standard, although those running the session will try to help out, if somebody is struggling they may be returned to shore.

Thursday Novice Racing update

Novice Racing will be held on the Thursdays when there is already club racing taking place and will consist of a Novice Start which may be around a separate novice course or around a shortened version of the full course for the evening. There will be no tuition. Booking will now be open 14 days before the event. Starting time will be 19:30 on the water.

Either use your own boat, or club boats are for hire for £3 per person per session.

The reason for booking is to ensure that sufficient rescue cover is provided and the sessions remain safe.

Fun Fridays

On behalf of the club I would like to thank Mike Rigg who, with the help of John Hookway, provided regular OOD cover which ensured dinghy racing through the Frost Bite and Early Bird Series. As a result, for the first time ELYC has enjoyed all year round dinghy racing!

First Aid Course

ELYC will be running a First Aid Course at the club. The instructor will be Anna Caldwell who has run very good courses at ELYC in the past.

An understanding the principles of First Aid can be one of the most useful qualifications for just about everyone, and may literally be a life saver. Injuries or illness may occur at any time when out sailing or boating so 1st Aid skills may be needed without warning – so be prepared!

The RYA First Aid course is specifically designed to cover the types of injury that may happen afloat as well as ashore. The certificate is a pre-requisite for all RYA Instructors, Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster exam candidates, and applicants for Advanced Powerboat Courses.

Dinghy Park

We have been informed that works will shortly begin to repair the damage that was done to the dinghy park in the storm last March.

To this end, all boats must be removed from the dinghy park by Saturday 26 February 2011 at the very latest.

At this stage, the works are estimated to take 3 weeks to complete

Matt Day will be giving a presentation on the Weather and how it works on Fri 4th March, at ELYC. I

t costs £6 per person, and places can be booked here, just click on training bookings. It is a great night for all - no matter how old or young, or how long you have been sailing!

Matt is a former member of the GBR Sailing Squad, a former Scottish Squad coach, and is currently a member of the Merchant Navy.

His presentation is full of pictures as well as chat, to help with understanding the concepts, which makes it appropriate for anyone, no matter how new to the sport or how old you are.

The evening will start at 7pm and will finish by 930pm, and costs £6 per person. You need to sign up here, but you can request an invoice if you prefer to pay by cheque or on the night.

After the exceptional circumstances where the tide, and adverse weather coincided last year the bosun has kindly puit together a list of threat dates for this year. Please note these indicate nothing more than a possible threat if adverse weather conditions occur. Generally such dates will pass without concern.

A "rule of thumb" has been worked on of any High Water level above 5.8m (Leith Datum), be aware that Fidra is generally slightly lower than Leith tide for tide.

These figures must be viewed in conjunction with accurate weather forcast, especially wind direction in conjuction with these date.

January 21st - Friday afternoon HW 15.34 until Sunday 23rd afternoon HW 16.59

Feb. 18th - Friday afternoon HW 14.33 until Tuesday 22nd afternoon HW 17.25

New Website Now Live

The New ELYC went live this morning, the site has been designed to be easy to navigate and to add additional functionality and capability both to aid both the running of the club and also to our members.

For the first time ELYC membership is online and we have also brought the online bookings for training and events into hte same website.

There is a member section which requires members to log in to see, and includes discussion forums and other member specific information. From a management viewpoint it is easier to manage communications and membership and financial information as this can all be done within the management section of the site.

Children’s Christmas Party

The children’s christmas party starts at 2pm in the ELYC bar with lots of exciting games and crafts. Then it is upstairs to the loft for some christmas party food before waiting for Santa and his helpers to arrive with presents for every child at 3.45pm.

The bar will open with Christmas carols playing and serving a range of alcoholic and soft drinks for adults.

Dinner Dance

Despite the snow and cold, a warm welcome was provided by Craigielaw Golf Club for the Annual Dinner Dance on 27th November.

The Awards this year went to a combination of new and old faces, of particular note where the Clubs top prize of the Kestral Propeller for Outstanding Service this year given to the Principal Race Officer Team of Ted Hill, Bill Roberts, Jimmy Sandison and Jim Sinclair for their endeavours of running the club regatta, 2 National championships and a traveller or two for good measure!

Other notable awards went to Ron Robson for Best New Sailor - despite being a keelboat sailor, Kirsty Chalmers as the Best Bandit, and Richie Hales and Christopher Devine for the inaugral ELYC Powerboat Challenge. A full listing of prizes can be seen here.

ELYC Powerboat Challenge

Big swell made ELYC’s first Powerboat Challenge live up to its name as 17 competitors took part in an event that measured handling skills as much as speed. Competition was very close around the obstacles. The course included tight slalom course followed by reversing around the buoy whilst trying not to flood the boat. Other challenges included coming to a stop, reversing into a “Garage” and finally coming alongside.

Bonus time could be secured by determining missing safety items that had been taken off one of one of the RIBs in the store. In the adult race less than 15 seconds separated the top 3 with Richie Hales (4mins 13seconds) just taking the win from Barry White (4mins 15seconds) and Alastair Dean (4mins 27seconds).

The Juniors also posted respectable times with Chris Devine (5mins 22seconds) taking the title followed by Andrew Stewart (5mins 35seconds) and Andrew Laing (6mins 10seconds).

It was a very successful afternoon. Many thanks to Sheila Smith for helping with timing and generally keeping everyone organised.

ELYC Cadet Regatta 2010

38 Cadets took part in the ELYC Cadet regatta over the weekend of 14^th and 15^th August. It was great to see that together with some of the more experienced cadets, many of the participants taking part had undertaken training this year including those from both the Summer School and the Bass Rock Bandits.

There was a briefing and on water coaching from Michael Gorzowski, RYA Scotland Volvo Champion Club Coach who helped out all weekend.

Saturday’s start was delayed due to surf
in the fairway, which meant waiting for the tide to fill in a little but close racing took part across both Topper and Handicap Fleets. After the 2 Races on Saturday, Calum Finlayson, Lewis Grant and Andrew Scott led the Topper Fleet after, while the Lasers of Chris Scott, Ewan Rycroft and Sarah Alexander led the Handicap Fleet.

On Sunday the swell had died down, but racing had to be abandoned during the second race as the weather gods where against us and sent in the Haar. After everyone was safely back on shore there was a prize giving.

Many thanks to all that helped out at the weekend especially Ben and Alex acting as race Officers, the rescue boat crews, Jane C-M and Lucy Gibbons for organising the event. We hope to see the cadets continue their successful weekend and take part in club racing.
